It was late Saturday night, the kids were sleeping, I had all their things lined up on my bed ready to start packing our bags. The next day we’d leave on a short 2-day staycation to Daytona Beach. Daytona is less than two hours north-east but yet we’ve never visited before. It was a bittersweet moment as I stared down at the clothes, some just fresh out of the dryer. Tomorrow our trip would begin but without my husband since he had to stay back to work. Normally I pack weeks in advance so I was somewhat scrambling to put things together while making sure we had enough clothes to cover all the bases. I think I was putting my packing off in the hopes that my husband could also come. I didn’t want to take up all the space in the suitcase if his stuff needed to fit as well. That didn’t happen.
As I opened the Smart Power liftgate, packing up my 2018 Kia Sedona I began dreaming about how the next couple days would go it quickly turned into fear. Would my kids drive me crazy? Would they fight the entire time? Would I regret even attempting this trip alone without my partner in crime? I have a horrible tendency of turning a good situation into something really bad and I’m trying hard to change my mindset. I was ready to just let life happen and see where it leads. Why was I already turning a trip into a bad experience when it hadn’t even begun yet?
Road Tripping with The Sedona
As we piled into the Sedona something about the buttery soft leather sounded me in comfort. I sat there quiet for a moment to refocus my energy and attitude while reminding myself of the joy these kiddos bring me on a daily basis. My three kids climbed into the 3-row minivan and buckled up. The SXL trim model we cruise around in is equipped with all the technology and amenities that three kids with ages ranging from 13 to 4 could ask for.
They had a backpack full of DVDs as if we were going on a cross-country road trip. The rear seat DVD entertainment system is my trusty friend (and theirs) whether we’re driving to the grocery store or out all day running errands around town. On this trip, the kids clearly had plans on making sure it would be used to the fullest to play all the movies they could. Sometimes you’d think we were at the local cinema with the way the Infinity surround sound audio system w/8 speakers has the movie blaring. The entire car is a movie theater on wheels when I want it to be or the kids can wear the included headphones and I can sing my favorite tunes or have an uninterrupted adult conversation with my husband.
With their first movie loaded in & headphones on it was time for me to put on my summer music playlist and hit the road. Thanks to Apple Carplay my phone was already linked up to the Sedona and ready to play whatever I wanted that would bring my spirit to life. Tapping on the gas you can feel the powerful 3.3L V6 working and ready to take you where ever your dreams take you. In this case, it was time for Daytona!
The 19″ chrome wheels give us such a smooth ride that we arrived in sunny Daytona before we knew it. I pulled up to the Hilton Daytona Beach and even the valet attendant commented on what a nice ride I had. We stood there talking specs for a minute while he kindly unloaded our bags and waited for my bunch to gather their belongings.
Over the next couple of days, we had a great time. No one fought, no one yelled, no one cried. While the kids caught waves on the beautiful sandy beach of Daytona I watched them from afar. Thinking about how I only have 4 more summers with my oldest. Thinking about how I could be a better mother to all of them. Thinking about how I need to get up from the towel I was sitting on and get in the water with them! Over the next 4 hours, we laughed, found shells, and made sandcastles but more importantly, we made memories.
I had anxiety for nothing and by the end of Monday, I didn’t want to leave. The valet driver pulled around with the car I jokingly say we live in and it was time to go home. The great thing about the Sedona is that you can make the journey your own every time you sit down. It’s not just a car that gets us from Point A to Point B, it’s an experience. An experience I change and customize every time I press the Push To Start button. Whether I’m opening one or both of the panoramic sunroofs, reach to either heat or cool my seat, or sit in silence to reflect on how our day went. I am wrapped in comfort knowing that the Sedona and Kia have our safety in mind while we spend our lives creating new moments in the car we drive.
