Roald Dahl, Disney and Steven Spielberg team up for the first time ever, to present The BFG, which opens in theaters nationwide today! I was pleasantly surprised with the fact that I actually enjoyed this movie, I honestly wasn’t sure what to expect. I took my 11-year-old daughter along with me to the premiere earlier this week – she has read the book TWICE and now I can’t wait to read it myself!
What begins, in my opinion, as a very awkward situation – a young girl being taken from her bed by a giant in the middle of the night – turns out to be a magical story of a bond and friendship between two different individuals that choose to lift each other up every chance they get.
Sophie, played by the young and talented Ruby Barnhill, is a young orphan who instantly appears to be far more responsible than even the woman running The Orphanage where she lives. Sophie, who calls herself an “insomniac” is up late one night and happens to spot The BFG, played by Mark Rylance, roaming the streets. In fear of the rest of the humans discovering him, the BFG whisks Sophie away with him to Giant Country and introduces her to his lonely fairy-tale life and his work of dream catching. Together, the two friends embark on a seemingly impossible journey while keeping us giggling the entire way.
The BFG is visually enchanting and absolutely stunning. The story is charming and great for the entire family. The BFG is presented in Real 3D and it adds a perfect amount of fascination and wonder, bringing to life a classic novel on the 100th anniversary of Roald Dahl’s birthday!
