Can Halloween Be About Something Other Than Candy?

That is the question and that is what I am hoping for when it comes to my girls. This year, Charles and I have decided that we aren’t taking the girls out to go Trick-or-Treating. I know! We’re horrible parents aren’t we?

See, the thing is, is that the girls already have so much candy thanks to Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party, Legoland, and SeaWorld’s Halloween Spooktacular.

I told Makenna that we won’t be taking them out and she says, “But kids don’t even come by our house so there’s no one to give candy to.” My response, “How would you know? We’re never here on Halloween!” My daughter (and we’re teaching Kendall) already knows the importance of sharing and we are using Halloween as another learning tool. All that extra candy we have that in all honesty will never be eaten is going to be shared and given to the kids that come to our door tomorrow. It’s not a total loss as Makenna can still wear her costume and we’re not giving away all the candy she collected at the theme parks.

I just want my kids to know that we are very blessed and we have so much candy that why not give some back to those kids who aren’t as lucky as we are, who couldn’t go to the theme parks to collect candy like we do.

Another way I wanted to give back this month was find someone in need and sharing a Kleenex® Brand Care Pack with them.

After going to the Kleenex Facebook page I learned that all I have to do is buy specially marked bundles or boxes of Kleenex® Brand tissue, find the code on the package of Kleenex® Brand tissue, and then go to Kleenex.com/softness, enter your code, and share the care!

My best friend is pregnant and she has been having a really hard first trimester so I knew she would be perfect to send a care package to. With morning sickness, a 14 month old, and the cold I hoped this little box of goodies would put a smile on her face.

Makenna loved the idea since she ‘loves her Auntie so much and wants her to feel better’ *heart melts*

I strongly encourage you to join the Softness Worth Sharing initiative and donate a Kleenex Brand Care Pack to someone in need.

Disclosure: I wrote this review while participating in an ambassador program by Mom Central Consulting on behalf of the Kleenex brand and received product samples and a promotional item to thank me for taking the time to participate.

  1. What a great program. I feel so sorry for your friend. Morning sickness sucks.

Really this is such a great idea. My grandson did go out but he has more candy than he needs and most is put up. No need having an overabundance of candy. So nice to send the kleenex package to your friend, that is awesome

  3. I prefer staying home and giving out my organic, gluten free treats. I know, I’m boring and so are my treats.

  4. Good for you for teaching your kids there’s more to holidays then gimme gimme gimme! As a society, this is something that’s overlooked all too often.

  5. That is so sweet to send a care package to your friend! :)

  6. What a wonderful thing to do! We love Kleenex :)

  7. I like the idea of helping out others instead of just giving more junk food.

  8. My sons are still very little, but I’m not sure what our focus will be for this holiday when they are older.

  9. You are so right, kids have too much candy (in general), and this time of year they sure could use this. I really like this idea!

My two oldest have never (NEVER!) wanted to go Trick or Treating. My daughter dresses up and hands out candy (thats always been her choice). We also do the school festival so the kids can dress up, be with friends, play games.. and/or the church trunk or treat, but my kids are always more interested in the food and games than trunk or treating lol. We also have 2 younger ones and while I think my 3 year old would love trick or treating, we still skip it (unless you count going to see my mom and visiting our neighbor who is older and just loves to see the kids dressed up).

It works well for us now since my oldest has epilepsy and we have a lot of houses in our neighborhood that go all out with haunted houses and strobe lights, she can’t be around that so we’ll stay safely at home and hand out candy.

  11. This is a neat suggestion!

  12. I love this idea!
