Wordless Wednesday – New Family Members

Meet Shane (yellow) and Rick (white) the newest members of our family.

It took us forever to find the perfect parakeets but when hubby picked up Rick he was instantly chill and didn’t want to leave like the others did. Same thing happened when I picked up Shane so it was definitely meant to be. They are so great and the girls love them so much.

Even though they are the family pet we told Makenna they are HER birds since she has been asking for a hamster, ferret or bird lately. So now she has birds and the responsibility to take care of them.

I came up with their names on the way home from the pet store. The lady at the store told us they were males but after doing my own researched they are females but we aren’t going to change their names.

Can anyone guess who I named them after?

We thought about getting a bird once, but it was against regulations in the military housing where we lived. Too bad because they really are pretty little things. Btw, love the names!

  9. they look so cute!

  10. How cute… and love the names! :) I had a bird once that hated kids, and women. Seriously. It was so mean. I finally found a friend who wasn’t married or no kids to take it. He loved Fred (his name)… and he was about the only person that did. lol

They are cute! We had a yellow/green parakeet named Kiwi. She repeated anything we said (or whistled). She was so much fun! Enjoy them!

  13. Gorgeous boys!

  14. I remember when I had a bird. I was so scared when it came time to change his cage. I hated the way the claws felt on my hand. I guess they weren’t for me.

  15. they are really cute! Do they make a lot of noise?

maybe we just got the good ones but no generally they aren’t noisy. Now that they’ve bonded they HATE not being near each other so if I take one out of the cage and not the other they will start chearping like crazy, start trying (their wings are clipped) to fly away and run back to the cage area. It’s so funny that they are already like that but man they are loud in those situations.

  16. They are cute. We had a parakeet but now I now have a pair of lovebirds. They keep me company next to my desk while I am working. :)

  17. I am not a bird person, in fact, they’re my phobia, BUT these guys are super cute!!

  18. They’re so cute! &I love the yellow one’s name! {My son’s name is Shane, lol}

  19. Even though I am afraid of birds and not fans of them, they are really pretty!

  20. I am not a bird person….but your birdies are very pretty…. :)

  21. Very cute, I love our outdoor birds like they are our pets!

  22. It’s been years since I had birds. Yours are gorgeous! I hope yours don’t argue like they do on the show. ;) That should be starting up soon, right?

  23. I’ve been wanting to get some birds. So cute!

  24. So cute! My sister-in-law’s parakeets just had babies a couple months ago.

They are cute. I have never owned a bird before. Are they a pretty low maintenance pet or no?

    • um. For the most part I would say so. I guess it depends on what type of bird you have. Of course with any animal they have there drawbacks.
dogs-feed, water, walk, brush, bathe, ect….

With the birds we take them out of the cage a lot so they don’t become biters. The more they are around people and enteracting the more likely they are to be nice.

Daily chores are cleaning the empty shells out of their food, changing water, changing poop paper. They can get messy when they eat and we find food shells on the counter but that’s a quick sweep with into your hand and it’s clean.

And at night if put a blanket over their cage they will sleep and not make a sound till you take it off in the morning.

AWESOME! My husband would kill me if I brought home a couple of birdies! They are good looking birds Jen!

  28. How can you tell if they are females? Those 2 names fit them perfectly. After watching the premiere of Modern Family last night I decided my next pet will be named Larry.

    • the top of their beaks where those two holes are. if that area is white they are female. Blue = male.

although these have a tint of blue I think they are female from the pictures I’ve seen online. Males are REALLY REALLY bright blue. These birds are just 5 weeks old though so maybe when they age a little bit the nose area will change? I don’t know though.

      Larry is a cute name!

They are too cute! Great pet choice! The lady at our pet store told us she thought our bunny was a girl, which was perfect since we were looking for a friend for our girl bunny. Several months later, we had baby bunnies!

  30. Those are very pretty birds.

  31. Tee Hee! I never would have guessed where you got the inspiration to name them. Very cute!

  32. They are cute love that they are different colors.

  33. I always thought you can tell their gender by the color of the top of their beak.. They are SOOO cute!

  34. Oh they are beauties! Shane & Rick from The Walking Dead?
