Becoming a parent is one of the happiest times of someone’s life. Installing a car seat? Is not. Car seats have definitely come a long way since my oldest was in an infant car seat but even today 7 out of 10 car seats are installed incorrectly. That means over half of all infants are at risk every time we get in the car.
Summer Infant has come out with a product to help parents sanity and to help our little bundles of joy stay safe. The Prodigy Infant Car Seat takes all the guesswork, back aches, and stress out of installing the base of a car seat.
The Prodigy Infant Car Seat is guided by Smart Screen technology and a revolutionary belt-tightening system, you know you’ve installed it correctly when a smile appears. It is that easy! No need to re-thread the straps either. With the SafeGuard 1-Adjust harness system, the straps automatically conform to your baby’s body for a perfect fit every time.
The car seat fits babies 4-32 pounds and up to 32 inches in height. The Prodigy Travel System also gives babies extra comfort and protection with a head and body support padding.
The Prodigy™ stroller accommodates children up to 50lbs and features a 3-position handle to accommodate all heights, a parent-assist tray with two cup holders and a covered compartment and a fully retractable canopy with a clear-view window to let parents see their child.
NHTSA believes the best car seat is one that fits a child properly, is easy to use, and fits your vehicle correctly. Each car seat tested goes through a stringent set of assessments, and a 5-star Ease of Use rating best fits NHTSA valued criteria. Summer Infant’s Prodigy Infant Car Seat earned this top score from the administration’s testers.
There are a lot of great features to this travel system so let’s start with the stroller first. Besides the soft cushy seat, you’ll get a five point harness with a velcro-covered buckle.
There is tons of storage with this stroller. We get a great parent tray with two cup holders and covered area for your keys or phone! What I don’t like is how shallow the cup holders are, it isn’t even deep enough to cover half a can of soda which just screams “spills” to me.
Baby gets a tray and it is probably my favorite of every stroller we have. The tray is divided into 3 sections and is removable for easy washing! The cup holders are great for bottles and regular sippy cups but if the sippy has handles on the sides it won’t fit.
I think the basket is a great size and with the angled front it makes it easy to get items in and out.
The seat reclines and is a simple one-handed task. Squeeze the top metal bar up and pull down in the same motion. It’s a multi-position recline so you can stop it at any moment you’d like. To bring the seat back up you simply just have to push the seat up.
The stroller is great for newborns with a full recline. Please note that I lifted up the back fabric panel so you could see the full recline.
The Prodigy stroller is completely easy to use and besides the great one-handed recline, you get handle bar that can be raised higher or lower depending on the height of the parent.
Also the top arrow shows how to fold the stroller but we’ll talk more about that in a moment.
It has a great lock latch and yes, the stroller will stand on its own. It’s very bulky though and in the truck of a sedan it pretty much takes up the whole entire trunk space. What I don’t like is that the stroller stands on the handle. Call me picky but it annoys me so much when a stroller is made this way. Why? because then it scratches up the handle
See what I mean? Total sadness in my book and a negative about this stroller, is that is believable. The scratches below? Those happened the very first time I closed it and stood it up. Can you guess what the handle looks like now that I’ve used it for a couple of months. It’s horrible and the instructions to fold the stroller are barely there now.
To make this a “travel system” you recline the stroller seat and place the Prodigy car seat right on top. It doesn’t lock in place or anything so I’m not liking that. But it has great sun coverage when you close both the car seat and stroller canopies.
The car seat looks extra comfy and cozy and is great for a newborn with its included basic infant insert already in place but also comes with an extra infant insert. Since all the inserts are included you can feel great about using them and they won’t do anything for the safety features.
Let’s get into the best part of the Prodigy and what sets this car seat apart from any other seat.
The Base! Gone are the days of climbing into the car struggling with the seat belt, latch system, and/or getting it tight enough.
The special little digital screen (and 3 “AA” batteries) helps navigates you through the installation process.
So you have the latch system installed but now would normally come the sweat pouring down my face as I’m hovered over a car seat trying to get it tight enough so it won’t move.
Like I said, Summer Infant has put all that to rest because all you have to do with this base is just move the lever back and forth it tightens the belt to the proper tightness!
Yep, that’s it! You’ll know you have the base installed correctly when you have all smiles
All in all the travel system is really great. Yes, it has some things I’d like them to change (a less bulky fold, a panel to cover the peek-a-boo window, not standing on the handle) but besides those few things it’s great! And the Prodigy car seat is in a league of its own and so great.
